Christmas plants

I should’ve posted this a month ago, but I’m behind, as usual. I purchased some fir, spruce, holly, and holly berry branches at Trader Joes and put them in a white square vase from Michaels Crafts, and tied a red bow around it. I don’t claim to be any good at flower arranging, but this turned out pretty nicely. I also picked up cinnamon sticks, but ended up putting them in a second container. They were all on a table just below the heat vent, so when the air turned on, my entire apartment smelled festive. Nothing like that to get you in the holiday spirit in Northern California :)

.

I also made a few terrariums as gifts, as I’m such a fan of air plants. I posted a preview of this one before the holidays, for my aunt. I paired it with white sand and mini air plants

Christmas terrariums

I’ve been busy collecting little figures and other bits for terrarium gifts. I can’t help but want to share my gardening with everyone… tiny terrariums are a wonderful way to share succulent cuttingsĀ and tillandsia. Etsy is a great resource (the penguins are from seller SongandBranch), and I picked up some fun rocks at a vendor at the San Francisco Dickens Fair. I won’t show any finished terrariums here yet, because some of the recipients read this blog. But… here’s a sneak peek. Geodes look like little snowy caves in a winter scene and the right air plant can look like a tree between the caves.

Mother’s Day Terrariums

Since I’ve fallen in love with gardening, I’ve started making customized containers as gifts. For Mother’s Day, I put together the pieces for little air plant terrariums and shipped them off to Pennsylvania. I wanted something low maintenance, but unique for my mom. I found inexpensive hanging globes at Pottery Barn’s after Christmas sale last year and bought two boxes. I got some neutral colored rocks, though I pondered colored sand, and just added air plants that I picked up at the SF Flower and Garden Show. It was creative, but super easy to put together. Here is a pic my mom sent. They’re sitting on the windowsill but can just as easily hang from the curtain rod.

Edit: after I posted this, I discovered another blog with a similar project, only theirs is an entire chandelier. You should definitely check theirs out. Additionally, the globes are also available at CB2.
